Project 16.1
Operations Task Force – Year 9

North/West Passage has supported an Operations Task Force for eight years. The intent of the task force is to establish relationships, enhance the scope of operations-oriented projects, support further implementation of project findings, and increase interaction among the states outside of major events. This project supported the task force from September 2021 to September 2022. Tasks include coordinating and facilitating operations-oriented, maintenance operations, and Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) related topics for discussion during task force webinars.

September 2022 A technician's forum was held on September 7. Presentations included the following:
  • Evaluation of Road Weather Messages on DMS using Roadside Pavement Sensors

  • Wyoming DOT Technician's Perspective of using IRIS (Open Source ATMS software)
    Presenters: Vince Garcia and Kevin Cox, Wyoming DOT
  • Next Generation Work Zone Data Integration and Dissemination – Work Zone Data Exchange (WZDx) Development from Planning to Operations
    Presenter: Justin Belk, Washington State DOT

July 2022 The Task Force discussed different options for closing roads without gates or barricades during the July 20 webinar.
June 2022 On June 29, Tony Leingang presented on Washing State DOT's Rural Incident Management Practices, Tools, and Technology.
May 2022 During the May 18 webinar, each North/West Passage member state provided highlights from their 2021-22 winter and flood season.
March 2022 On March 16, Travis Lutman presented on North Dakota DOT's Autonomous Attenuator and Autonomous Mower projects.
February 2022 On February 16, the Operations Task Force members discussed project ideas for the Steering Committee to consider for Work Plan 17.
January 2022 The January 19, 2022 webinar included an update on the Minnesota DOT (MnDOT) WZDx Grant presented by Garrett Schreiner and the Washington DOT (WSDOT) WZDx Grant presented by Justin Belk.
December 2021 During the December 15, 2021 webinar, four presentations were provided on worker presence activities.
  • WZDx Standards for Worker Presence – Kristin Virshbo, Castle Rock
  • Michigan DOT Worker Presence Activities – Michele Mueller, Michigan DOT
  • GM Worker Presence Efforts – Curtis Hay and Dave Craig, GM
  • Ver-Max Worker Presence Activities – Serge Beaudry, Ver-Mac
November 2021 The November 17, 2021 webinar included a presentation on MnDOT's AVL advancements in winter operations from Joe Huneke, MnDOT and also provided a round robin opportunity for member states to share advancements in winter operations from their state.
October 2021 The October 20, 2021 webinar included a summary of the work completed from Project 15.5 North/West Passage Responses to the COVID-19 Pandemic and a round robin discussion on continued responses to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
September 2021 The Task Force updated their membership list and planned meeting topics for the year during a webinar on September 22, 2021.
