Use of Mobile Sensors and Maintenance Decision Support for Automated Road Condition Reporting

Department of Transportation (DOT) maintenance personnel and Highway State Patrol officers have provided road condition reports for over 60 years. The methodology of collecting, consolidating, and disseminating road condition reports has changed over time as new data processing and communications capabilities have evolved. This project focused on documenting current road condition reporting practices, mobile sensors (atmospheric sensors, road condition, maintenance devices, vehicle operating parameters, cameras), and maintenance decision support systems. Emerging technologies and trends as well as recommendations for future road conditions reporting practices were also documented.
